JCRC Working Practice
"The Orange Sheet"
This document was discussed at the
JCR Committee meeting of 20th May 2003
Deal with it yourself...
- It's in your area (Services, Welfare etc)
- It's a simple query
- It won't affect other JCRC members
- Contact another JCRC member directly if...
You need practical advice, e.g....
- Contact the Treasurer before spending money!
- Contact the Comms Officer if you want something on the website
- Contact the Vice-President about Open Meetings
Email the whole committee...
- When you're not sure what to do
- For problems that you can deal with yourself, but that other committee members should know about.
- If other committee members might be confused by your actions
- Even if it will be discussed at a JCRC meeting, since it will give other members time to think about it before the meeting
- You can email the whole committee at committee@downingjcr.co.uk
Submit it for discussion at a JCRC Meeting if...
- There is likely to be disagreement amongst the JCRC
- When you want to discuss an issue face to face
- When electronic conversations are degenerating into arguments
When things go wrong...
- Some issues are too big to be dealt with by one person
- Thirteen heads are better than one... tell the whole Committee what's going on
- Don't talk 'on behalf of the JCRC' to a newspaper or to College without consultation
- If time is of the essence, call an emergency JCRC meeting (email the committee and we should be able to meet within 24 hours)
Generally, try to avoid...
- Only sharing information only with your friends on the committee. This leads to cliques forming and people will feel left out. Everyone on the committee has an equal right to know.
- Getting angry in email conversations. Rather than hitting 'Send', pick up the phone and ring them up. Phone and face-to-face are better than email for solving disputes.
- Talking to people 'in confidence'. Sometimes this may be unavoidable, but explain that you would like to tell the JCRC so that we can provide constructive suggestions.
