Minutes for JCR Exec Meeting, 17th February 2003

Summary of Main Points of Meeting:

1. Welcome
   • Ian welcomed the members of the new committee
2. Second Round Elections and CUSU Elections
   • These will be held together on March 5th in order to maximise the turnout. Nominations for the remaining JCR positions open 10 days before the election.
3. Treasury Business.
   • James reported an application for £100 by the Table Football Society to the Initiatives Fund, which was made under the last Exec. The current Exec approved the expenditure.
   • Matthew enquired if the accounts could be made available on the web. Discussion of whether this is desirable. James will investigate if this is feasible.
4. JCR Website and web server
   • Matthew has been working on a new website, but it requires facilities that are not available on the current JCR webserver.
   • Ideally we would use the new server that the IT department have purchased, but the JCR would be responsible for security, maintenance. It will take to set up.
   • In the meantime would like to get the site up and running. Commercial hosting for six months would cost around £60, which can come out of Initiatives Fund. Exec agreed to fund this.
   • Discussion about forums (messageboards) on new site. Potential for abuse? Need moderation and restricted membership.
5. University Challenge
   • We have been invited to enter a team
   • Ian will talk to Nathan (Bar President)
   • Would like to make an 'event' of it, maybe using actual buzzers rather than a written quiz. Ian will gauge interest in the next email.
6. Red Nose Day
   • Will be organised by Ents officer and committee.
7. Any other business
   • Renovation of toilets in bar: Ian reported this is being funded by bar and College (not JCR). Women's toilets will also be refurbished over Easter. Possibility of intstalling CCTV outside toilets. Need to remind people not to leave taps on in portaloos!
   • Emailing jcr-officers at dow dot cam dot ac dot uk will reach whole committee.
   • Problem of spam to generic @dow.cam.ac.uk email addresses. Very little we can do! Just delete them.
   • Next open meeting will be after the elections. We want to pass the constitution changes. But, will have to be implemented in two stages... since we don't want to change makeup of Exec this year.
