Apologies Received from:

Summary of Main Points of Meeting:

  1. Welcome
  2. Elections
    • Will be held on March 5th
    • Ian to circulate rota for manning the ballot box
    • There are candidates for both remaining Exec positions and various other committee posts
    • CUSU elections held on the same day, so times determined by CUSU
  3. JCR Website
    • Matt Mayer reported on an encouraging first week for the new website (www.downingjcr.co.uk)
    • 2500 pageviews per day, at least 210 people from Downing have viewed the site, 26 people signed up on the forum. Matt Dyson suggested advertising this on the plodge blackboard
    • Exec approved a donation of £20 to SRCF who are hosting the site (much less than the amount suggested in the last meeting for external hosting)
    • Looking to expand on information provided by the site, including information for potential applicants
    • Matthew suggested the possibility of developing an SMS service to alert people to important JCR information, as well as cheap drink offers in the bar! Will investigate potential interest and cost.
    • Terminals on stairacases: under discussion with IT department
  4. The Bar
    • Nathan gave an update on the toilet renovation
    • Possibility of putting a fixed charge on people's bills to cover damage when the perpetrators cannot be found. Discussion as to whether this would be a deterrent, and fairness to those who don't use the bar
    • Prices will probably have to rise
    • Motion about making bar non-smoking could be raised at the next Open Meeting
  5. Sharing Squash Courts with Sidney
    • Matt Dyson reported that the current facilities were already overstretched and in need of repair
    • Sharing with Sidney not sensible
  6. JCR Open Meeting
    • Best date appears to be 11th March, though strictly not enough days notice to call one for that date.
    • Constutution changes will be debated - but will need to be segmented as certain issues (eg voting rights for womens and mens officer) are more controversial. One of the old Exec (Matt Dyson?) will propose the motion
    • Other possible motions are on removal of Saturday brunch, non-smoking in the bar, green electricity
    • Microphone and speaker would make it easier to keep meeting in order
  7. Red Nose Day and University Challenge
    • Jenny Duggan to organise Red Nose Day, hopefully in conjunction with the bar
    • Ben Wiles to organise UC heats
  8. Any Other Business
    • Welfare: Matt Dyson gave an update on condoms (hopefully will arrive in time for open meeting), the cycling trip to Ely (small subsidy will be used from Welfare budget) and £5 rebates for cycle helmets.
    • Treasury: Depreciation Fund down to £100. James is preparing mid-year budget, so money may have to be squeezed from MCR Grant (£500), JCR Grant (£500) and unused society money. Investments are not in a great state due to stockmarket troubles. James to meet investment managers next week. He will also enquire about their ethical stance.
    • Green: Rachel keen to set up a Fairtrade stall

The next meeting will be held on Sunday 9th March 2003 at 7pm
