Rules for the JCR election

Following is a complete summary of the rules of the election. Most of these rules come from the DCAC Constitution, and all were passed by the JCR Committee on Wednesday 19th January 2007.

  1. You can only stand for one position and must be a member of the JCR to stand (this normally means you are doing your first undergraduate degree in Downing) and not in your final year (i.e. you must not expect to graduate during your term in office). If you have any doubts as to your status, just ask.
  2. The Returning Officer is Livvy Brinson, the JCR President, who you should contact if you have any questions.
  3. You must be proposed by, and seconded by, two different members of the JCR body.
  4. You are allowed one 250-word A4 sized written manifesto only
  5. No other written material or posters are allowed. This includes using the forums to promote you or your policies (see below). The only permitted form of campaigning is face to face.
  6. You should not send out, or allow others to send out, mass emails enouraging people to vote for you or promoting your policies.
  7. No canvassing is allowed near the ballot box. This means, on election day, you are not allowed to hang around unnecessarily near to the ballot box, when it is in the Porters Lodge or Hall.
  8. If you break any of these rules, you may be disqualified from the election. All decisions relating to rules and disqualification will be made by Amy Froomberg, in consultation as required, under authority granted by the JCR Committee.

Rules for the JCR forum

  • The forum is treated as 'written' material and therefore candidates should not write anything relating to their candidacy, their policies etc.
  • Candidates should not use the forums to attack other candidates
  • It is strongly suggested all candidates refrain from posting on threads that discuss the elections
  • Any anonymous/guest posts (or posts from non-Downing JCR members) that promote one candidate or attack another will be removed by the moderators
  • Any current JCR Committee member standing for election will be removed from positions of influence such as moderator
