How to Stand

If you want to make a difference to your college community, why not stand for a position? Take a look at the our guide to the positions available and what they involve, and decide which is right for you.

To stand, follow these simple steps:

  1. Find two people to propose and second your nomination, they can be any members of the JCR body (which is anyone doing their first undergraduate degree in Downing)
  2. Submit your nomination to Ali McWhirter by e-mail () and in his pigeon-hole in the P'lodge. This must be done by midnight on Thursday 25th February (first round deadline) or 28th February at the latest.
  3. You must include:
    • Your name
    • The position you are standing for
    • Who is proposing and seconding you
    • Your e-mail address
    • Two copies of your manifesto (one by email, one in Ali's pigeon-hole)
  4. Ali McWhirter will confirm by e-mail that he has received your nomination
  5. Any manifesto must be on A4 paper and must be no more than 250 words long .  This will be displayed it in the Porters Lodge and on the website. You may wish to include on it who proposed and seconded you. Email your manifesto to to get it featured on the website.
  6. Attend the hustings to put forward your ideas to the rest of the JCR and answer any questions they may have. Each candidate is allowed one minute to speak (there may be a lot of people to get through!), Senior Officers' positions up to 3 minutes, and Presidential candidates up to 5 minutes. Questions can then be asked, but any question must be to all candidates.
  7. Go and vote for yourself on Friday 5th March and get a say on your prospective colleagues on the committee!

You must remember that you are bound by a set of rules: PLEASE READ THEM!
