The Griffins Committee Members

Griffin's Senior Committee:

Phil Boulding - Senior President
Phil is a long term supporter of Downing sport. He was made a Griffin while a Downing student for his achievements in rugby – receiving a Blue in all three years.
His enthusiasm for Downing sport has not dwindled. We are so grateful for all that Phil continues to do for the Griffins Club, despite his astoundingly busy work schedule!
Phil is a Barrister and a member of Keating Chambers. If we ever needed convincing that excellence in sport and one’s career can go hand in hand, Phil is the man to look to!

Bill Clyne - Vice President
Bill is a Downing Fellow, and a Professor of Mechanics of Materials. He studied at Johns’ as an undergraduate and PhD student, during which time football was his main sporting interest.
He has been integral in the rejuvenation of the Griffins Club over recent years, before which time there were not even any female Griffins, how things have improved(!).
Bill is committed to making the Downing sports club one of the best sporting clubs in Cambridge as it well should be. Needless to say we are happy to ignore his other associations with the Eagles!

Paul Barker - Senior Treasurer
Paul, is a college Fellow and a University Lecturer in Chemistry. In his role as Senior Treasurer, Paul over-sees the financial endeavours of the club. Rugby is Paul’s main sporting interest, which he played throughout his student years and is now coaching at Cambridge Rugby Club.

Ex-officio members

Tariq Sadiq - Development Director
Support from alumni is a great asset to the club. Tariq and the Development team aid communication with alumni and encourage donations to the club – so that we can do more.
Money raised for the Griffins Club through the telephone campaign, enabled us to award the Griffins Prize for the first time, in the summer of 2009.

Barry Everitt - The Master
As well as Master of Downing College, Barry is a Professor of Behavioural Neuroscience and yet still finds time to take an interest in all areas of Downing sport. The encouragement that Barry affords to Downing sporting involvement is common to the other colleges and is a great advantage. The Griffins Club is immensely grateful for his guidance and support.
You may be less aware of Barry’s own impressive sporting background. He captained his University basketball team while a student. He also plays squash and has turned his hand to rugby. Since being a Downing Fellow, Barry has been made an Honorary Griffin for his rowing endeavours.

Junior Committee:

Clare Palmer - President

  • Clare achieved her first Blue in Athletics in 2006 and has been a member of the Blues team since then.
  • 2005-2006 she captained the Women's Blues team, and 2007-2008 she captained the Alligators.
  • Clare is currently the Athletics Club Social Secretary and leads the javelin squad.

Clare was the Griffin's Club Treasurer last year, and has now taken over as Junior President. Clare is a successful sportswoman, who has not only achieved high standards in university athletics but also devotes much time and effort to college sports. Clare is a member of the netball and hockey clubs in Downing and received colours in each of these. On top of this she captained the athletics team in college for 2 years, and she also manages to squeeze in the occasional football match for Downing.  We don't know how she does it!

Katie Marshall - Secretary

  • Katie recently finished her first season playing for CULNC and received university colours.
  • She was awarded CULNC 2nds Player of the Season.
  • Katie captained Downing Ladies' Netball Team for the 2008-2009 season.

Katie is the Junior Secretary for the Griffin's Club. Her main sport is netball and she hopes to play for CULNC again next season. Katie also captained the Downing Ladies Netball team, having won the 2008-9 league undefeated. Within college Katie also plays on the ladies' football and tennis teams and is the current JCR President.

Katie Brown - Treasurer

  • Katie was Ladies' Football captain during the 2008-2009 season.
  • Katie has been known to play for CUWRFC – just when she fancies it!
  • Katie has just been elected as mixed netball captain and has been Downing Rugby Social Sec this season.

Katie is a talented football player and a great captain, who achieved promotion for her team in the first match of the season – an impressive feat! She is a well known face on the Downing sports scene, whether she is playing or screaming on the sidelines – Katie will be there! And amongst this Katie still manages to find time to complete her work as JCR Vice President.
