Tips and General Info

You are here: Downing JCR » Freshers

Here are our top tips for surviving Freshers' Week...

  • Don't worry too much about finding 'the perfect outfit' for fancy dress freshers' parties; they're really informal and most people won't notice what you wear...Just have fun with it!
  • Make sure you set some time aside early on to unpack and settle in; it's easy to get caught up in the rush but you'll feel more settled and comfortable if your posters are up and you like how your room looks.
  • Don't put too much pressure on yourself for Freshers' Week; most people have a lot of expectations and it might not meet all of them. Don't necessarily expect instantly to find a group of friends or understand your way around the Faculty or department. It generally takes a term to feel properly settled, and a while to figure out who your friends really are, what the quickest way to your department really is, and a good work routine for you.
  • Don't be put off if everyone seems to have travelled the world, got perfect grades, read the entire reading list and be incredibly sociable and beautiful. Everyone is just as nervous and insecure as you, is probably less prepared than they are letting on but everyone will find their place at Downing and Cambridge - there is such a variety of people that it is only a matter of time until you meet people who fit you.
  • Freshers' Week is a fantastic time to enjoy Cambridge and meet lots of new people, but don't be scared to take some time to chill out, have a cup of tea or sort out your room. Yes, there's lots on, but don't feel obliged to do everything Ð join in as much or as little as you like.
  • Remember, if you have any questions, the f'reps are always happy to help!
