Where will I live?

You are here: Downing JCR » Freshers

So, what's all this about choosing accommodation?

Before you come up, you will be given the choice of two rent bands and be asked to indicate a preferred price range. You will then be allocated a room. The main difference between the bands is whether or not you have an en-suite bathroom. All rooms have internet access and some kitchen facilities in their building (but this again varies, according to price range). All first years live in college, either in one of the staircases (L, J, I), in Howard Court or in Kenny A or B. Second & third years live in College-owned houses on Lensfield Road, Gonville Place and also College staircases. Don't worry too much about where you live; all accommodation is good and you'll make friends in your own block and in others! Wherever you go, you still get the thrill of your name painted in the hallway!

Kenny A and B

Possibly the most luxurious accommodation in college, the Kennys have it all Ð lovely refurbished kitchens with ovens, freezers and lots of worktop space, en-suite bathrooms, baths, heated towel rails and lots of storage space. Some might say that they are more like hotel rooms than student accommodation!

Howard Court

Lovely large rooms with en-suite bathrooms and often a second pull-out bed under the first. Good kitchen facilities, though not as luxurious as those in the Kennys and a lot smaller. Just outside is a small grassy area which is surprisingly quiet, and great for relaxing or working in when the sun is out!

The Staircases

L: The first thing you notice about L is that it's very red. The walls, the carpets, the staircase, all red - but don't let that put you off! Rooms are spacious and en-suite (with amazing showers) and there are full-length mirrors on every corridor. Some rooms have a second bed stored under the other (useful for guests) and storage space is pretty good. The kitchen is pretty small, but there is enough room for a cupboard each and it's amazing what you can cook up using just a microwave and two hobs.
J: Renowned for its enormous kitchen and wood panelling, rumour has it that John Cleese lived here during his time at Downing. Putting famous alumni aside, J is a staircase with a lot of character. The rooms are spacious with mahogany wood panelling and, although you have to share, the bathroom facilities are satisfactory.
I: This staircase is shared with other years, but the top floor is reserved just for first years, with a separate bathroom and kitchen. Like J, the rooms are spacious and nicely decorated and you might have a lovely view across the court!
