Maintenance Advice

Replacing a light bulb

How many downing students does it take to change a light bulb?! Well, you can do it yourself, just pop along to the porters lodge to ask for a replacement bulb then pop it in. We would just like to say please turn the power OFF before doing this, and stand on something steady!

Bleeding a radiator

If there are funny noises, often high pitched coming from your radiator there may be air trapped inside which needs to be “bled” out. You could do this yourself, however you need a radiator key and the heating turned off, so its probably best to ask the porters.

Problems with the laundries

“ I put my card in but it stole my money ”-

This means that the machine has registered your credit but an error meant this wasn't transferred to the machine. Please take your card to the porters and explain the problem, they should be able to arrange for the card to be sent to the laundry company for the money to be refunded.

“ I put my money in but it didn't work ”

again, a trip to the porters lodge is your best bet, but please go straight away. If there is a further problem please contact us and we take your problem to the right person!

There's a problem with my heating or hot water

If you live in a house and know where your thermostat is you should check that first, but otherwise the porters will be able to sort you out.

Doors and Gates

Any problems with any doors or gates should again be reported to the porters, who are very good and will help solve the problem. Remember that gate and door codes are changed a few times a year so make sure you're up to date!
