Making calls

As part of the ntl at uni service, you will have a telephone handset in your room. If you do choose to use your own handset, ensure that your ntl handset remains in your room as it is listed as an item on your inventory.
To protect our customers from anyone misusing the telephone service, all calls can be traced upon request from your University. If you do experience any problems please contact Customer Services on 0800 052 1680.

Obtaining your extension number
To obtain your 5 digit room extension number dial 0800 013 6556. The system will automatically give you your number.
Top tip! You can obtain your local 01223 number by dialling 173.

Making internal calls
Internal calls (calls to other students within the University) that use the same telephone handsets are completely free - all you need to do is pick up the phone and dial the extension number you require. To call extensions on the University Telephone Network (UTN), dial the 5 digit extension number you require. You don't need to use your rechargeable phone card to make internal calls.

Making external calls from within the University Telephone Network
To make an external call (calls to numbers outside the University) you need to use the ntl at uni card supplied within the welcome pack (available from the porters lodge).

Receiving external calls
Any calls made to you will connect directly through to your room. Callers should dial 0845 045 4884 and following the voice prompt enter your 5 digit extension number.

International calls
Most countries have agreements with the UK to allow full access to all UK numbers. If you have problems making or receiving calls it is probably due to the originating country's telephony agreements. We recommend that your caller check with their local operator to determine the reason for the problem. If you need further assistance, ring customer services on 0800 052 1680 from your ntl phone.

Your voicemail passcode and user tutorial
To set up your voicemail for the first time:

  • Dial 1571 to enter your mail box
  • The first time you access your mailbox, a user tutorial is automatically activated, which explains how to record your name and personal greeting.
  • You are advised to change the passcode to a new number between 4 and 10 digits. Choose a number that you remember but avoid anything obvious like 1234. Do not use a 0.

Recording a personal greeting and your name

  • Enter your passcode using the telephone key pad
  • Follow the voice prompts The system will now address you personally when you check your mailbox for voice messages and inform others when you forward a message (e.g. 11.15am from Jamie Roberts). The system will state your name when callers address messages to your mailbox.

Retrieving your messages from your mailbox
You will know you have a message on your voicemail when you lift the handset in your room and hear a broken dialling tone. Messages in your mailbox are protected by your passcode. The way you retrieve messages varies depending on whether you are in your room, dialling from another telephone within the University, or dialling from any other telephone outside the University. Messages will be played back with the most recent first.
