There are a number of bursaries and prizes you can apply for while you are an undergraduate student at Downing. The Tutorial and Admissions Office will be able to give you more information if you require, and they've helped to put together this list of bursaries, funds and prizes.

Basic Loans and Grants

Student Loans

Available to all UK students. Everyone is eligible to apply for up to £3,000. You can apply for an additional £1,000 depending on a means-test. Note that many other funds won't pay out unless you are taking out your full loan entitlement.

There are extra loans available for
students who pay top-up fees. Please look at the website www.slc.co.uk for
full details.

Via your LEA in England and Wales, your ELB in Northern Ireland or the SAAS in Scotland. See www.slc.co.uk for more details.

Tutition fee payment

Depending on your and your parent's income, your LEA may pay for all of, or part of, your tuition fees.

Downing Association Fund Payable for books, educational materials, specialist equipment, music. Not travel. Downloadable application form Ranging between £40 and £400
Downing Bursaries The last resort. You must be taking out a full student loan and be unable to fund essential expenditure. Downloadable application form Typically about £500
University Hardship funds When your outgoings exceed your income (especially for those living out). Will cover 70% of income shortfall. See University webpage. Via T+A Office. Deadlines: December/March £100 to £3500/year

Issac Newton Bursaries If you receive a full or partial LEA maintenance grant you stand a very good chance of receiving a Bursary. See Newton Trust website for more details Get a form from your tutor. Deadline: start of November. up to £1000
Denham Book fund Students studying English get book tokens - these are guaranteed for every 1st year, and some may be left over for 2nd and 3rd years. Downloadable application form. Deadline: first Friday following the beginning of the Michaelmas Term up to £30
Ivor Evans Hardship Fund Students studing economics from West Wales, or nearest offer. See T+A office up to £500
Tony Denton Memorial Award Major sponsorship from Noble Denton (marine+engineering consultancy) for a 'promising' engineering undergraduate. Includes time working with Noble Denton. Details sent to applicants before arrival at Downing £5000
Senior Harris, Jarvis and Seton Scholarships Lawyers upon leaving Downing, having achieved a first in at least 1 year. To set up in the legal profession Awarded automatically £200-£1000/year for three years, depending on number of firsts achieved
Senior Whitby Scholarships Medics upon leaving Downing, having achieved a first in at least 1 year. To set up in the medical profession Awarded automatically £200-£1000/year for three years, depending on number of firsts achieved
Vacation Study Grants For travel expenses related to your course. Only for trips on "pink list" courses. Downloadable application form. Deadline: division of each term max £500
Disabled Students Allowance For "costs you incur, in attending your course, as a direct result of your disability." Word document with more details. See DFES website Depends on circumstances
Benefaction of John Crane For medical costs eg physio-therapy (not sports injuries) See your Tutor £500
