Medicine at Downing

Course Structure

  • System of Lectures (optional but you'd be mad to miss them), supervisions (optional but you'll be in trouble if you miss them), practicals (required attendance)
  • Works out to be about 4 - 5 hours scheduled per day Monday to Saturday, and reading/essays on top

Year 1 – MB, BCh & BA

  • Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology – examined in May/June
  • Medical Sociology, Epidemiology & Statistics – smaller exams at the end of Lent term
  • + a few days with a GP (literally a few) – coursework done during term
  • No Options

Year 2 – MB, BCh & BA

  • Pathology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience & Human Reproduction – exams in May/June
  • -Options – smaller courses towards BA only (e.g. tumour biology, embryology etc)
  • + few days in hospital & few days with voluntary organisation – coursework during term

Year 3 – BA only

  • Wide range of possibilities such as combinations of medical or natural science subjects (if staying on in Cambridge ) or even arts (if going to London ) – exams & research projects
  • Several visits shadowing a pregnant woman and observing support - coursework

Years 4 – 6 – MB BCh only

  • London , Oxford or Cambridge to complete clinical training

Why Downing?

  • Close to all departments, lectures & practicals
  • Many Supervisors here are course organisers or examiners (useful at exam time)

  • Pretty, friendly college with good reputation for Medical Sciences
